It wasn't that too long ago I was looking for help in web development and search engine optimization. Since I am a member of a Facebook group consists of over 11,000 women entrepreneurs and founders of products and services, I thought I should ask the members for recommendations. Quite a number of them suggested Zhe Scott. They said she is "The SEO Queen". And so it seems. I got connected with her immediately and sought her advice on the best practices when it comes to optimizing the Veragano website for searches on Google, Bing, and Yahoo. I followed her on LinkedIn. Over time, Zhe also became a Veragano customer as she too was following our brand. She has since loved her de Vera pumps. This is her shoes, her story.
Rima: If clients are to describe your character, what are the three words they would use?
Zhe: Determined, Creative, and Intelligent.
Rima: What are the must-have pieces that make up your power outfit?
Zhe: High heels, a pearl necklace, and Tom Ford eyeglasses.
Rima: What was your inspiration in pursuing business as The SEO Queen? Was there a story behind the branding of "The SEO Queen" for your business?
Zhe: After I graduated from MIT, I thought that I would work my way up through the ladder to C-Suite in Corporate America. However, life happened. I got married, divorced, diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and I had to reassess and reimagine my life. I landed in a small tech company in Novi, Michigan, sometime in 2010 and built it from nothing to just $500,000 in recurring revenue in SEO projects in only two years. However, I left the company in 2012 after the company's owner refused to raise my salary. It was that year I started and launched my first company. It was called Square Biz SEO Services. After dealing with health, family, and career crises simultaneously, I brainstormed strategies with Fraser Hay. As a result, The SEO Queen was born. Now, I am proud to say that my company has grown exponentially since its launch in 2017. The SEO Queen is a Digital Marketing Solutions company that helps businesses stop worrying about their marketing stack. Our goal is to be a marketing technology solutions provider. From Mobile App Development to Website Design to SEO, we do it all for businesses. We know the way consumers search ebbs, flows, and changes over time. We track our clients' keywords to follow the market trends without allowing them to suffer a dip in their visibility, credibility, or profitability.
Rima: What is your ultimate business goal at this point?
Zhe: My ultimate business goal at this point is hockey stick growth before the end of Q2 2021. Q3 & Q4, 2020 is all about laying the foundation. I am working with my team at The SEO Queen, tightening our Standard Operations Procedures, Sales processes, and our customer acquisition process. My biggest focus since 2017 has been to build up Goodwill in my brand on a national level. We have trademarked The SEO Queen and acquired the Theseoqueen.com domain. Also, The SEO Queen has been featured in Hubspot.com,CarolRoth.com,BlackBusiness.com andBlackEnterprise.com. Now is the time to keep getting coverage and expand our customer base. We have acquired many new great clients and projects by now, and I am still as thrilled as I was before to keep building up this amazing company for my team and our clients.
Rima: How do you balance work and life responsibilities?
Zhe: As a single mother, this has been a challenge. There is an 11-year gap between my son and daughter. So when my son was born, although I was elated, it has been quite an adjustment for us. I have learned that I can't do everything myself simultaneously. I had to learn how to increase my self-confidence and self-esteem, even more, to value my time and my son's time and energy. I included my son in my passion for music. I also had him included in my marketing company. I think engaging my son in the business world is an excellent way to spend more time with him and still keep my company moving forward.
Another piece of balance is the humility that comes with realizing that I could not manifest my vision for my company alone. I am so grateful for having such an incredible team with me. Check them out atwww.theseoqueen.net/team.
I am still excited about all of the things that my team and I are doing for clients; from collaboration with business owners worldwide to book publishing to telemedicine mobile app development to the launch of the marketing campaign for Lady Zhe's single "Elevate". COVID-19 has made me stay home more now. Since then, I've taken up gardening and spending a lot of time with my son. The time I have saved from driving everywhere has allowed me to put my son's education a high priority in my life too. I am already seeing a positive difference by now. There are always more things that I would like to do, but I have learned to be grateful for all of the progress I am making each day. Celebrating the wins along the way has been vital.
When my company was featured in Black Enterprise, for the work that we did in developing a website for a $44 Million Dollar Voucher program for the California Clean Off Road Equipment program, that was a pivotal point for me. I have been trying to get to Black Enterprise since 2016! To answer your question about balance, I have to say that I take one step and day at a time, and I am very intentional and re-evaluate everything constantly.
Rima: What is your best advice to businesswomen who are looking to improve their SEO efforts and ranking?
Zhe: I have four words: Hire The SEO Queen. Seriously though, great SEO requires that you utilize your best keywords for both your on and off-page optimization efforts. This means that your website is mobile-friendly, has SSL, and loads faster. Those three things will help your company tremendously. Next, make sure you are developing content for your brand that utilizes the best keywords that your best clients are looking for to find your products or services or even your company. This is a very, very, very important step. Content creation, coupled with leveraging all of the free tools that Google and Bing have available, is also critical to your success in SEO.
There is no silver bullet when it comes to business. There is no short cut to success. You have to put in the work to create content, optimize your content, and push it to search engines. Make sure that you pin your entire website to Pinterest. This will also help boost your web visibility. Google views Pinterest as both a social network and a source of great backlinks. In the end, applying all the best SEO practices can bring in more clients and increase sales.
